I am using Windows XP Pro on my server for my small home office network.
my question pertains to using Windows Automatic Update

I have it set to automatically download and install updates on this server
but from time to time certain updates require the machine to be rebooted
How can i keep up to date without the server needing much (preferably ANY) attention, (in fact it gets so little attention that the case is hidden and thus out of reach) and still manage through the updates that require restart?

I doubt you will be able to fully automate the patching process to require
no user input at all.

In your situation, I'd probably enable 'remote desktop' on the server
machine, and then connect to it from your regular machine from time to time
to perform maintenance. That way, the server can remain out-of-reach. You
can reboot over the remote desktop session.

Go to help and support, and look up remote desktop.
Basically, just a matter of checking one check-box on the server ( and
possibly setting up permissions ); then creating a remote connection on your
regular box.
