question about accessing hidden share c$

Norman S. Clerman

Windows XP friends,

I have just added a new computer running Windows XP Pro to a small
office workgroup (MYGROUP). The computer name is APPLE. The other
computers in the network are running Windows 2000 Pro except one which
is a Windows 2000 Server. In Windows Explorer on the W2K machines the
computer APPLE appears in the network.

On the Windows XP computer I have added the users, as administrators,
who need to access the C$ hidden administrator share on the XP computer.
From the W2K machines I try to connect to the XP machine by typing in
the command prompt window

net use q: \\APPLE\C$

and two messages appear:
first:

The password is invalid for \\APPLE\C$

and then

Type the password for \\APPLE\C$

I type the password corresponding to the user on the W2K machine, who is
an administrator on the XP machine, and I get the message

System error 5 has occurred.

I do not have this problem when trying to connect from one W2K machine
to another.

Any suggestions?

On the XP machine turn off "Simple file sharing"

To turn Simple File Sharing on or off in Windows XP Professional, follow
these steps: 1. Double-click My Computer on the desktop.
2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
3. Click the View tab, and then select the Use Simple File Sharing
(Recommended) check box to turn on Simple File Sharing. (Clear this check
box to turn off this feature.)

That was simple. Many thanks. Now that Vista is just about here, I
suppose I should learn XP.
