XP friends,

I just upgraded a computer (name APPLE) on a small office workgroup
(not in a domain) from Windows 2000 Pro to Windows XP Pro. Everything
seemed to proceed correctly and APPLE is up and running.

I am an administrator on every computer on the network. I have disabled
simple file sharing on APPLE. I cannot access APPLE anywhere on the
network. APPLE appears as a subbranch in My Network Place in Windows
Explorer on all the other computers, but left-clicking on it produces an
error message

\\APPLE is not accessible
the network path was not found

Any suggestions?

A stab in the dark...

Whatever workgroup (default for XP is MSHOME) will be what you need have it
join. As it was an upgrade did it maybe had an older workgroup name and need
to be changed? Is file and print sharing enabled? (And why disable simple
file sharing for this?) Just some food for thought.

Thank you Galen,

I recently replaced a Windows 2000 computer in the workgroup with a
Windows XP computer. At first I experienced the exact same problem with
it as I have now, and the problem was solved by turning off Simple File
Sharing.

The workgroup name did not change and APPLE says it's a member of it.
On the other computers in the group, under My Network Places, I see
first the correct workgroup name, then, under it, APPLE, so the other
computers know it's present on the network. I just cannot access its
file system.

Where do I enable file and print sharing? Perhaps you've hit on the
problem there.

Head to your LAN settings, properties, make sure the box is enabled. You can
also run the wizard and (believe it or not) it doesn't do that bad a job.

One other thing to check... On all the other PCs, do they have an account
with the same user/password? Does this one also have a user with that same
password? (A default admin account perhaps?) If not then try making one.

Thanks again Galen,

First: yes, I do have a common user on all the necessary computers with
the appropriate rights. Thanks for reminding me.

I'm making progress. I ran the wizard as you said. The other computers
on the network now see under APPLE the following three folders:
Shared Docs, Printers and Faxes, and Scheduled Tasks. But the most
important item doesn't appear: the C$ administrative share. I need that
so I can back the computer up from another computer that has a tape drive.

Any ideas? Again, thanks very much for your help

*chuckles* I'm running out of ideas. I keep a mental checklist for this sort
of stuff. Next I'd triple check to ensure that you have that particular
folder shared. Navigate to the folder(s) and right click > properties >
Sharing and Security > adjust as needed.

Double click on 'My Computer'.. when the window with the drives listed
appears, right click on 'C' and select properties.. the next dropdown menu
has 'Sharing and Security' as an option, or you can continue to the next
window, and click on the 'Sharing' tab..
