Question: 98SE -> XP Pro

Hi,

At the moment I'm running Windows 98SE, and i think it's time to move on
before it reaches an 'extended support phase' or 'non-supported phase' where
no more security/bug fixes will be released. So at the moment, it would be
easier for me to 'Upgrade' to XP Pro than to perform a clean install. I
have a few questions however.

- Are there any "common" problems found after upgrading rather than a -clean
install?
- Once I upgrade to XP Pro, can i perform a clean install using the upgrade
disk at a later date?
- If I end up buying the upgrade, can I choose to perform a clean-install
anyway (using the upgrade cd) if I show my '98' CD.

With a little advance planning and preparation, you should be
fine.

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Hardware Compatibility
List: (http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/default.asp) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications.

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for and sold with Win9x/Me
very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent hardware quality
requirements. This is particularly true of many models in Compaq's
consumer-class Presario product line or HP's consumer-class Pavilion
product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K before it, is quite
sensitive to borderline defective hardware (particularly motherboards,
RAM and hard drives) that will still support Win9x.

Hi again

NEEDED I HAVE
300Mhz Processor 600MHz Processor
128Mb RAM 128 Mb RAM (I'm going to be upgrading to
512 if i go agead and upgrade)
1.5GB Free 10GB Free

So as for those requirements - i'm fine. Also, it's not a compaq, or HP.
As for the "upgrade advisor". It's a slight problem since it's a 50Mb
download and I'm on a slow 56k connection. I can try to download it
though - just not instant. Most of the software I have installed is
compatible with XP anyway (I think, i'll have to check with the upgrade
advisor when i get it downloaded).

I'll check h ardware requirements (HCL) too just to make sure. Thanks for
pointing out the article - it's very useful

I'll post again later (new post) if i have any further questions. I'm going
to have to upgrade eventually, they won't support Windows 98SE forever.
