My brother has a PC with Windows XP sp2. When it is being used, it hangs
frequently.
What could be the reason.?
Should I run some of the items under SYSTEM TOOLS such as Disk Cleanup,
Disk Defragmenter etc and if so, in what sequence?

I would start with check disk "chkdsk"
Clean out the temporary internet files (check the cache - should be between 50 and 250 mb)
Disk Cleanup
Defrag

But I would also check for spyware etc

Have you checked the "event viewer" to see what is "hanging".
