In my friends Win XP SP2 Home edition, he gets the following ERROR msg when
opening IE.

"The instruction at 0x7473c7d6 referenced memory at 0x0000000c2. The memory
could not read. Click OK to terminate the program."

What could be the cause and what is the solution?

Do a thorough check for malware, following all of the steps at one of these

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing programs like Messenger Plus,
whose ads for malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince
you that you owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.

If ram memory is in question,download microsoft memory tester,install
to a formated MS-DOS floppy,boot to floppy,run the test(s)...I believe a cd
version is available also,get it at:http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp
