Putting computer to sleep..

I have a gateway 400VTX laptop. Everytime i reinstall windows, it is able to
go to standby until about a week after reinstalling. Its been a week and a
half since i tried to reinstall windows and the computer will freeze on the
'Going to standby...' Screen. How can I fix this?
