Publishing to sub-directory

I have taken over a site for my company that the former webmaster used FTP to upload files. I use FP2002 to edit the pages and then publish to the server. When I try to use publish I get an error message that says the folder / is an executable folder and I can not write files to it. When I log into the server using FTP I have to change directory to get to the folder where the site si that I am working on. How can I publish to a sub directory on the server?

You must contact the host to make the appropriate changes on the server to
allow you to publish. This is a default security setting if there are
folders in the web that have executable permissions.

You can only publish to sub directory if it is a FP subweb. This requires
the server to have the FP extensions and that you always publish via FP's
http mode.
