Publish Web problem

After years of successfully updating my web site using Frong Page, suddenly I
try to update and when I get to put in password and hit OK, no files appear
in the window and it goes no further. I've checked password to make sure it
is right. I've even downloaded a free ftp programme (but am not sure I'm
doing that right), but I really want to use the publish function in Front
Page as it's easier and only updates changed pages.

I did move the files to a new directory, but in desperation, I've actually
created the whole site from scratch and copied the page content over to try
to fix the problem, but with no luck.
Could it be a conflict with Internet Explorer. I do have a new computer,
but have updated successfully since getting it. I have been tearing my hair
out for days. Can anyone help?

Verify you can get to your site in FP
Browse to the home page in IE and select File Edit W/ FP and log in
- if you can't contact your host

If using FP 2003 you can reverse publish from local (online source) to remote (offline or PC destination)
The currently open site in FP is always the local site
Select the Remote Site View and in Remote Site Properties select file system and browse to your PC based FP Web folder
- that will be the remote site
Select the option to publish from Remote to Local
Then select the link to Open your Remote site in FP
- it will be the local site in that session of FP
And set it's remote site properties to point to your online site

I'm using FP2002. I used File Edit W/FP and managed to open site, so that is
working. I understand about remote and local site, but couldn't do the bit
where you said "select file system" in Properties. I opened site in FP
(remote), then opened "File/Properties" but it opens page properties. I
can't find the place where it has the option to publish from remote to local.
Any further clarification please, I'd be grateful.

Those options are only available in FP 2003

I moved site to old computer with Win98 and it comes up with a message saying
"Server error: ..." and then says it doesn't have file permissions for
\_vti_pvt\service.lck". When I look at that file it is empty. Do you think
this is the problem, and the thing hangs when I put my password in and
doesn't load files into Publish Web box?

You really need to publish between locations. However just delete the service.lck file.
