publish my web site

Hi, i use front page 2003 and run windows xp. In the publish website box
there are four options, the last of which is "publish file" This publishes to
a folder on my C/: drive, This then appears to publish as normal but it is
useless as it asks for the server extensions.

Is there any way i can run a full working version of my site without
uploading it to the internet where it is live?

Will the front page server extensions run on my pc?

Will the extensions harm my pc as it is not a server?

Any information anyone can give me will be greatly appreciated as I am
tearing my hair out.

Thanks in advance.
Drew.

Server will run on your machine with no problem if your version of XP is
PRO.

Otherwise you will have to work with disc-based webs (C:\\ whatever path) -
anything that requires server stuff will not work.

Hi Rob, Thanks for your response. I am running XP Pro.
I have downloaded server extensions 2002 and installed them. (hopefully
correctly)

I am trying to learn how to work with a database.
I can open the site in my browser window and index.htm appears fine, I then
have three choices/links to click.

“Results Page†“Submission Form†and “Database Editorâ€

Each link leads to a page with the same name as the previous links and they
are .asp pages. When I click one of these links a box appears and asks “Do
you want to open or save this fileâ€

“Open†then opens the page as an editable page.

I do apologise if I am making some silly error, any further help you can
give me will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much for the time you have already given me.

Have you installed IIS from the Windows CD??

Control panel > Add / Remove programs > Windows Components.

IIS "must" be installed "before" the extensions are installed.

Then when working with ASP, you must be working on the web in IIS, using the
web address:
http://localhost/webfoldername
or
http://username/webfoldername

Username being the user currently logged onto the computer.

You're welcome. Steve (or others) will have to help you install IIS and the
extensions...I have to stumble my way through server stuff myself so I can't
describe the procedure well enough to help.

called "Web Wiz Gide" I found some very detailed instructions there it was a
very usfull site for beginers like myself.

tearing my hair out.
