xxxxx.pst is not a valid personal folders file.

i exported my emails as a pst data file before i reformatted my pc.
now when i try to put back all the data, outlook tells me it is not a valid
pst file.

properties of the file are correct though, it shows up as an office data
file. but refuses to import into outlook.

Firstly do NOT use the Import function - in Outlook go to File-Open-Outlook
Data File.
Secondly, where is this pst file? If on a CD then you need to copy it to
your HDD and remove any read-only attribute, then do the above.

Thirdly, do not use Export to save a PST file. Just backup the original
PST, then use this backup as your PST file on the new system.

The process you used to create the PST and/or "put it back" has corrupted it
to such an extent that is is unrecoverable. Since we don't have the details
on what you did, there's no way to pinpoint the steps that led to the
problem, but one common way to produce what you see is to copy a PST while
Outlook is still open.
