PS and PCL setup printing to same network printer

Hello,

I have been trying to track down a problem with Win2K SP3 and Win2K
SP4, well it could just be me. I know it is possible to have a PS and
PCL6 driver installed on a local workstation that prints to the same
network printer.

When I try to add a PCL6 printer and I tell it to print to print queue
\\server1\printer1 it works fine.

Now when I try add a PS printer and tell it to print to the same print
queue (\\server1\printer) all the 'add wizward' does is set previous
installed printer as the default. I am never prompted or given the
option to rename the local printer.

Anyone have any ideas.

Two things:

1. with NT, 2000 and later, a "network printer" on a client is not much more
than a reference to the printer on the print server. There is nothing to
"rename".

2. if you want a client to have the option of using different printer
drivers, then create two printers (print queues) on the server, one for each
driver. Then you can add both printers to the client.

Having different driver versions on the client than on the print server for
a particular printer (print queue) is an invitation to trouble - print
spooler crashing, print spooler using excessive CPU time, incorrect
printing.
