Programs stop responding

Hello all I am using XP Home with SP1&2 installed, now and again when the
computer is idling programs that I am using stop responding these are any
type of program. To overcome this I have to use the Ctrl+Alt+Del function
click on the cross to close down the window and then my programs will
function correctly.

Also most recently the menus in the start section will not open when double
clicked but present a menu "open"or "expore" when i click to open it will
function, but will cancel itself when the Ctrl+Alt+Del function is used.

Any suggestions

Thier are two hotfixes for xp you might try,1st is #892052 The 2nd,#894472
They may help youre problem.
