Problems with explorer

The Old Timer

If I use Explorer to open a file it opens. If I then go to the top of
screen & click on anything at all the PC stops responding entirely. The
only way to get beyond this is to press CTRL,ALT,DEl & shut down
explorer. How do I fix this?

Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Reports in the System and
Application logs for when the error occurs and post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

I've looked at the event log as suggested & checked about a dozen event
errors. Every one that I have tried says it's event 1000 but there is
no more information available.

I have tried this many times now & every time that I click the link it
says event ID 1000 application error sorry be there is no more
information. I must have a couple of dozen of these errors. I have
tried the suggestion but have never been able to get the details copied.
I suppose that I could just rite down the details it says & post that
into an email if there is any point of doing that. Please advise.

Is it worth choosing a restore point from say a month ago & see if that
helps?

You have only posted part of each of the Error Reports.
These have also all come from the Application log.

Can you post copies of the earliest after you have booted.
This will hopefully give clues as to what starts the problem.
Look in the System log first. Full reports please using the
Tip for copying I gave you.

What are your anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangements?

How much RAM memory?Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task
Manager and click the Performance Tab. Under Commit
Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

What is your CPU processor speed? Right click on your My
Computer icon on your Desktop and delect Properties to get
this information and the amount of RAM memory.

How large is your hard disk and how much free disk space? In
Windows Explorer right click on your C drive and select
Properties.

I'm AGV antivirus along with AdAware,& Spybot & everything is always
right up to date. I have Pentium 4 3.0 processor with 1 GB RAM. I have
several hard drives & all have plenty of space left. Even when I doing
lots of heavy work on the PC I can still open more windows without a
undue wait.

How long ago did these problems start?

The error messages seem in the main to refer to
multimedia applications. Most seem to be quite obscure.

What programmes have you recently installed?

The problems started about a month ago. Some of the multimedia
applications were recently installed like the Compro Pro DigiMate PC
digital tuner card & DIVX's latest codec. But these applications are
running OK. The things that aren't working are things light right click
in most instances as well as most of the functions in Explorer when I
can't rename a file or use right click without an error.

Well my machine is now fixed or at least semi fixed. With the help of a
friend we deleted a few programs & right click is now working OK. I can
also rename files etc in Explorer. The only thing not working correctly
is Windows Media player 9 which can't play back files it used to be able
to to. I also tried to render a video clip using Vegas in WMV format
but I kept a getting the message that there was no template for this
codec. Very strange since I had used it before. I used Device Manager
to locate the codec's that are installed on my machine & could not see
one for WMV. I did however see to old codec's that are no used so I
clicked on them to delete them & they appeared to be removed, but the
next time I opened Device Manager they were there again.

Any Ideas as to what the problem might be?
