Screensaver not responding

I'm running XP Pro SP2. When the screensaver starts the screen just goes
black except for the taskbar at the bottom. To get the screen back to
normal, I have to hit ctrl-alt-del. It then says that the screensaver
program is not responding. Another symptom is when I try to change the
screensaver in Display properties, the hourglass appears and nothing else
happens. I have to do ctrl-alt-del on that to get the window to close. Same
thing happens if I click on "Preview" or "Settings".

How do I fix this? It was working just fine before.

Thanks.

Screen savers are files named *.SCN, and are stored in the %windir%/system32
folder. You have a corrupt copy of some SCN file, and need to delete it, and
get a new copy. Running MSCONFIG will show an "Expand File" button, if you
can locate your 'original setup media' to replace the file.
Just deleting the file will let you set another as default. You can run an
SCN by just d-clicking it. Try them till you find the corrupt file.

Mark,

Thanks for your reply. I went to that directory and clicked on each .scr
file until I found one that worked. Seems there are a few that must be
corrupt. But the screensaver isn't a big deal to me. I just wanted it to
work.

Thanks.
