cpu usageAfter latest automatic update to windows XP - Build
2600.xpsp_sp3-gdr.090206-1234: Service Pack 3
The computer boots normally, but the only thing working in a normal fashion
after starting is the cursor. If I try and open a program, then the computer
takes several minutes to respond, and / or then freezes without responding.
CTRL-ALT-DEL takes several minutes to open, then several minutes to sort by
cpu usage - nothing showing that is using CPU.
If I boot to safe mode, then computer works normally.
Ran antivirus, spybot - nothing showing as to cause of problem.
Thinkpad 2379 DKU

Uninstall the last updates.
Reboot.

Better?

K - but I meant go to the Control Panel --> Add or Remove Programs --> Show
Updates checkbox *checked* --> Scroll down and figure out what Microsoft and
Windows Updates were installed recently by the installed date and REMOVE
them one at a time, rebooting after you have removed all the latest ones.

Some common rootkits, such as the TDSS rootkit, can cause the symptoms you
cite, and not appear in any lists and can be invisible to some A/V programs.

Task Manager won't show you much, try Process Explorer, which you might have
to download to another machine and copy over in safe mode. That will give
you a much better idea of what's happening.

I've succesfully removed that rootkit with the MalwareBytes app, but you
may need to let the scans complete and show results *even if it says nothing
is found on the scan page*. And, if it is found, the System Restore
points *will* be infected, so you'll have to delete them.
