Mouse action fails.

I am using MS XP, home addition; also a cordless optical mouse and keyboard.

The mouse oftimes ceases to function. This happens to both my cordless
optical mouse, and the mouse pad on my leptop.

Symptoms: I can't drag folders; can't open folders properly; will not obey
my "save" command; no response when I click on my destop icons.
When the mouse fails, the open window "dims" and I cannot do anything. I
must use ctrl-alt-del to re-activate the mouse--this opens the Task Manager
Window, and I simply close it again, it that reactivates the mouse!!!!. It
will work for a while, but then fails again, and I am continually doing the
ctrl-alt-del routine.

This began happening last week. So, I restored the system back to
two-weeks ago when the mouse (mice!) were working fine.

Any suggestions??

As a test, try just the touchpad or mouse, disabling the other. Also
post to a hardware group and you might get better ideas.
