mouse not functioning

I have used a Logitech LX300 cordless keyboard and mouse for a few weeks,
until the mouse became intermitent. The LED stopped working, but would
restart. New batteries were fitted and the Logitech software was saying
batteries in keyboard and mouse were all OK. It eventually stopped working
altogether although the wireless receiver seems to indicate that it is
connecting to the mouse and the keyboard. I reverted to a Logitec corded
optical USB mouse, which does not work when plugged into the PS/2 socket,
using an adapter. This was the mouse I used before the cordless one and
never had any problems connecting via the PS/2 socket. I now have to use the
USB socket and this is intermittent. I frequently have to unplug and re
insert the USB plug to get it to work again.
Is this a problem with XP SP2 or something a bit more fundemental? Any
suggestions for a fix please?

Do you have another computer you can try the mouse in? Your PS/2 port might
have gone south which is not the nicest thing to happen to you this week I'm
sure.

I do have an old W98 machine and this gives out the most awful noises when started with the cordless mouse, but functions fine with my other mouse. I should have tested it before I suppose. I hope this means that it is the mouse that has ceased to be, as they say.

Then it's a good thing. A mouse is cheap to replace. A burnt out PS/2 port
is not so cheap unless you happen to be able to remove solder and replace it
on your own. I'm glad to hear that it was only the mouse gone awry and not a
more serious problem.
