Program Not Responding Error

I am having trouble with "Program Not Responding" errors. My operating
system is WindowsXP Home Edition with SP3 updates. The trouble is not
predictable or systematic in occurance. And is also not limited to only one
program. It was first noticed to happen with Internet Explorer. But has since
been experienced while working in Photoshop CS4, Outlook Express, and Nero
Express. The latest instance was with Windows Explorer which caused the
screen to go blank for some time. I've tried to use Taks Manager to stop the
unresponsive program by clicking the faulty program and then clicking end
now. But this seems to have no effect. Also it sounds like my hard drive goes
chaotic when this occurs. I have updated Windows and all revelant programs as
far as I can find. And recently updated IE to version 8 hoping this would
help with stability. Still no help. I am very confused as to why programs
become unresponsive as well as a solution to this problem. Any insight on
this would be much appreciated.

Unresponsive program can have a variety of different reasons such as:

1 - Virus/Malware problems
2 - Some app taking up 99% of your CPU cycles not allowing other apps to
interact with the OS.
3 - Hardware timing out and making the system appear to hang.

As well as some others. Some things you can do to remedy the issue is:

1 - Look in your Device Manager to see if all devices are installed and
working.
2 - Look in the Event Handler for obvious errors that are happening quite
frequently.
3 - Remove Malware - http://www.randem.com/virusproblems.html
4 - File system issues - run chkdsk /f on the drive to correct file system
errors
5 - Hard disk problems. Run testdisk from the Linux System Rescue CD.

First let me thank you for your timely response. I have checked the Device
Manager for proper installiations. Everything looks good here. I'm not sure
what the Event Handler is you are talking about. I have checked for malware
using both Windows Defender and SuperantiSpyare Remover, as well as running
my current up to date Norton Antivirus. SuperantiSpyware Remover finds
tracking cookies from time to time, but nothing else. I have run chkdsk as
well as disc clean-up and disc defragmenter. I am not familiar with testdisk
from Linux System Rescue CD, as I am running WindowsXP on my system. Any
further advice or recomendations are welcome. Thanks again for your
assistance.

I was referring to the Event Viewer, my mistake. Event Viewer is in
Administrative Tools from Control Panel. Also open Task Manager then click
on the title CPU twice. It will show you in decending CPU Percentage which
processes are using CPU cycles and how much. AS far as TestDisk you can
Google it there is also a Windows version that you can use. Report back.

Installing IE8 is certainly not the way to get back stability!

Since your issues happen randomly and in all programs, you probably are
having hardware issues. It could be something simple like a failing power
supply or something more serious such as a failing hard drive. Back up your
data immediately and do some hardware troubleshooting, starting with the
power supply and then the hard drive.

Testing hardware failures often involves swapping out suspected parts with
known-good parts. If you can't do the testing yourself and/or are
uncomfortable opening your computer, take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local equivalent of
BigComputerStore/GeekSquad). If possible, have all your data backed up
before you take the machine into a shop.

Now in addition to some programs "not responding". I am now getting:
"Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close". "Do you
wish to send an error report to Microsoft?" Also once got a dialog box that
said "Dr. Watson Postmortem Debugger has encountered a problem and needs to
close. Sorry for the inconvenience. Do you wish to send a report to
Microsoft?" I have found the Event Viewer (Local) and there seem to be a
quite lengthy list of application errors and system errors in the log files.

Now I am really confused as I have no idea what any of this stuff means or
how to go about using this imformation to solve my problem.

Please read my previous response to you. It sounds like you have hardware
failure(s). Do the hardware troubleshooting and report back the results.

This system is less than two years old. I would hate to think I am already
having hard drive failure. I wonder if a faulty system fan could be the
problem? Starting the hardware trouble shooting process now, but will
probably take some time to complete. Thanks for the advice.

I also did a system restore. Since all the errors have occured since the
twelth of March, I restored to a safe point on the eleventh. So far I have
not encountered any of the previous problems. System is stable, running
great, and giving no errors or programs not responding.

To answer the question you asked in your last post: being new doesn't mean
that hardware won't fail. In fact, if hardware is going to fail it will
usually do so quite soon or go for years.

However, if doing a System Restore has solved your issues then something you
installed was the culprit. Hopefully you'll be able to figure out what
changed on 3/12 and not do it again.
