I bought a xp home edition upgrade today and i'm getting
error messages when i try to install it. I tried to
contact support but it says i need a product id number. I
tried entering the product key but it won't take it, i
also tried entering the numbers on the box but they don't
work either. Can someone tell me what i'm doing wrong.
Thanks

The product id is not the same as the 25-character product
key on the retail box.

You can find the product id in the registry.
Start regedit, go to
hkey_local_machin/software/microsoft/windowsnt/currentversi
on. The ProductID will be listed in the right frame. Use
it to get to tech support. If you have a Dell, IBM,
Gateway, eMachine or any other OEM computer, MS Support
will direct you to contact the manufacturer of your
computer for support.

If he can't install the software then there will not be any PID created to
check on.
