I had a major crash and needed to re-install XP. Is it
necessary to re-activate and how is it done?

If you haven't 'significantly' changed any of the hardware on your machine,
you shouldn't have any problems re-activating. If you are 'Clean'
installing XP, you should a pop-up asking you to activate XP.
 
Hi,

No pop-up appeared. After the crash, I had to go back to
a restore point prior to installing XP, which was an
upgrade from 2000. How can I manually activate again?

Choose run from start menu:
%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a
