Problems with XP

I have a new Dell computer with Windows XP home edition.
I have had it 3 mos. now. I was on cable internet and
husband wanted to try the DSL internet service.
Everything seemed to be running fine with the cable
internet. Last week I got the cd to download the DSL.
BOOM! Even though I can access the internet slowly, it
started to happen.
1. Windows acting strange
2. Getting different messages windows.
A. fix registry window that said it could fix the
registry and delete certain things if I wanted to,
so not knowing what it meant I *X* out of it.
B. getting a window that said, *Insufficient system
resources exist to complete the requested service*.
At this time I was trying to open up Internet
Explorer.
3. Windows looks like it is dripping off the screen.
Slowly closing down or not wanting to load/taking a
long time to load anything
I have emailed DELL about it, I have called the DSL (SBC
YAHOO!) about it. Of course DSL won't take the blame but
in an email DELL told me my windows were corrupt. Gave me
a website to go to to reinstall Windows XP. I guess I
have two questions for you. First, how did the windows
corrupt?? I have no clue to that. Second, Is it
absolutely necessary to reinstall the windows? I am the
first to admit I am NOT computer smart. I am afraid of
messing the whole system up. Any suggestions? Have I
done something wrong by going to the DSL? Thank you for
your time. I'm just so unhappy right now.

Can you elaborate on what you actually did? Tell us how you installed the
new DSL modem that you received from your service provider.

I received a cd from SBCYAHOO! to put on computer for the
internet. They sent a modem with the cd. At first I
thought I was going to have to install this ethernet
board they sent but when I told them I was already on a
modem for cable internet, they told me that I wouldn't
have to install the board. Good thing too, because I
wasn't about to open up my computer and void any
warranties. I do remember when it was loading I got a
window about downloading it. Something about ignoring and
doing it anyway...can't remember exact wording. When it
was done I call SBC and told them I had downloaded it and
that it wasnt working right. They had me do some settings
to it. Afterwards told me it would be ok now...which it
isn't! I have a small icon in the taskbar now that when I
poing the browser to it it says HomePortal not Activated.
Whatever that means. They have had me set it a couple of
times and it will show activated and then go back to not
activated the next time I log on. I'm sorry that I am so
duhhhh about all this. I am trying my best to learn what
I can. My last computer had Windows 95 on it and was an
IBM Aptiva. Maybe I've made the wrong choice by choosing
DELL?? Thank you for your help.

Why when you have a Ferrari in the garage do you want to go out and buy a motor scooter

Use system restore and rest your sytem to a date immeditaely prior to installing the DSL software

Typically ADSL / DSL services are about 10-20% of the Cable performance

Unless there is a BIG financial difference, do not even think of ADSL / DSL when Cabler access is available. ADSL / DSL is one way of providing a higher speed [or bradband up to 512Kbps usually] access [compared with Dial up 53Kbps] to those homes where cable isn't available.

WOW! Some of us own Ferraris??? I was told that the DSL
would be quicker than the cable I had. If I had thought
the cable was better, NO I would NOT have change internet
carriers. Besides, I didn't ask for a smart alec answer
either. Thank you!
