Problems with Sound Card installation

This should be simple but apparently it is not! I am trying to help a
friend who had their sound card removed from their computer and so I bought
a new one, model 1417 from http://www.ppa-usa.com

They claim no compatability problems with XP. The machine is running XP
Professional and the sound card driver does not pass the Windows Logo
Testing. I am able to load the driver although it is not smooth and the
machine would reboot several times with no warning but eventually it loads
and in Device Manager it says that it is working correctly. Still no sound.
In Device Manager, under the Properties of the Mixer Device, the MIDI Device
and the Audio Device, The Status of the Driver is stated as follows:

Status: Driver is enabled but has not been started

How do I "start" the driver?

I have reboot many times but the machine does not seem to interface to the
sound card.

There was an old sound card that may not have been removed properly. I have
tried to disable to driver for that old sound card and have tried
uninstalling it however it keep coming back after I re-boot.

looking for some more in advice/feedback.

Thank You!

Who manufactures sound card "model 1417"?

There is something to be said for getting a cheapo "Creative Labs" (or
'Diamond MM' or 'Turtle Beach' or even 'ESS'/'SIIG' or 'Encore') sound card
vs. some generic no-name.

I suppose you have downloaded and installed the latest drivers from:
http://www.ppa-usa.com/driver_pages/soundcard.htm

You may have less trouble returning that generic 'thing' and getting
somehting a little more supported..

http://www.pricewatch.com/sound_cards/

Even the cheapest Creative Labs would be likely to cause less trouble
because of industry standards than whatever that card is. heh
