Sound device not found

Hello,

I recently recieved a pc from a friend that I am working on in an attempt to
turn it into a (usable) media center pc. However, whenever I try to play a
song, sound, midi, etc, I get the error message that the sound card is not
found and to try and install the device/driver.

PC Specs
*Hp Pavillion a400n
*2.7 Ghz Intel Celeron Processor
*256MB RAM
*60 GB Hard Drive
*Unsure of sound card brand, but uses the Realtek AC'97 driver

When I open device manager, the only hardware conflict is with the Plug and
Play software device enumerator. The dialog box with it says that "This
device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers
required for this device. (Code 31)."

I have tried rolling back the driver, uninstalling and letting Windows
install the driver, and downloading the newest driver from the manufacture's
website, all with no luck.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Did you try the updated (top of page) or original (scroll way down) drivers from
here?

Did you try the offline diagnostics on the same page?

If the above fails you can try:
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads...&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false#AC

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried those things, and still nothing. The
diagnostic program that HP provided tells me the same thing that every other
program does. "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot
load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)." I have also tried
flashing the system bios with the updated version, with the same result.

A NIC or other device is possibly using the same interrupt as the sound
card. Try removing devices till you get it working. With one machine,
I had to resort to a USB wireless setup to get around a similar conflict.

I went and looked through the IRQ's for everything and there aren't any
conflicts I can see. The only thing that might be strange about it is that
its use IRQ 17.

Perhaps calling it an interrupt problem was incorrect. Whatever the
cause, there was no indication (in my case) other than the fact that
there were crashes any time two different brands of wireless card were
installed. This didn't happen with the USB wireless device.
