Problems with AVI capture

i am trying to use wmm2.1 to capture dv from my camcorder. i am using a
firewire card, on a 512 mb ram and p4 2 gig box. while capturing if i select
the wmv format all works fine, i get video and audio. but if i use the dv-avi
option, i get jerky video and garbled audio. is this a codec problem ? i
tried registering the qdv.dll again. that too had no effect. i ran the avi
through g-spot which showed type=Multipart OpenDML AVI, and video srv
type=dvsd. all other audio/video codecs are n.a. i gspot i found the
audio/video renderers to be quartz.dll.
please help. i want the avi to do editing before burning into a vcd.

tried with windv and virtualdub. same effect. is this a codec problem. my
machine has a decent spec and i have NOTHING running when i am transferring
video. what am i doing wrong ?
