Problems opening links

When I click on a link, for example, in an email message, windows opens a dialog
box with the title "Locate Link Browser", but it opens the link in my browser as
it should. Likewise, if I click on a desktop shortcut to http://www.whatever,
it give me an error message "Windows could not find http://*******", but it
opens the link in my browser also. What is causing these error messages? Any
suggestion would be appreciated.

Although this is written for servers it should be the same for XP:

A few XP users had the same as you & this worked, but they weren't pointed
to this doc but one person posted the same instructions, which worked fine
