Problems opening attachments in Microsoft Outlook-XP

Starting about 2 weeks ago when I receive an attachment
and double click on it, then get window to "open"
or "safe to disk". I click on "open" and I get an hour
glass and half the time I get "program not responding" or
it will open after about 1-2 minutes. I've never had this
problem before and when I clicked "open" in the past it
was immediate. I have windows XP-Pro and am current on
firewall and anti-virus. Help!
