Problem with sound from volume control icon.

Can someone explain why when I click on the volume control icon and move the
volume up or down, I no longer hear the usual check tone that normally
accompanies a change in volume... all I hear is a very slight 'beeb' from the
desktop PC itself and nothing from the speakers...

Before you ask, the speakers are working fine... music, videos, and even
windows tunes work without any problems... just missing the test tone when
adjusting volume...

Thanks,

Thanks,

I lost that sound once. It's referred to as the "default beep." The loss
was caused by the mishandling of a registry key by the installation of
Nero's Multimedia Player. I understand they've since fixed this error but
if using an older version of this program or possibly another
multimedia/sound program, it may have done the same thing.

I found an MS Knowledge Base article and used it to fix things up. MVP
Kelly Theriot also has an "edit" at her website that for this problem. Go
to this page: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_s.htm

Scroll down to the "Sound" topics. The "Fix the Ding.wav" reference does
about the same thing as the steps in the MS Knowledge Base article. I would
send you right to the download link for that edit but this page has some
other sound troubleshooting advice that might help if a missing
"ding.wav"/default sound is not the root cause of your problem.
