volume

When I used to adjust the volume a tone would sound when I released the left
clicker on the mouse, that would be at the volume the computer was then set
at. All of a sudden, now, instead of hearing a tone when I release the
clicker, I hear a muted beep that is always the same volume.

Any ideas what happened or how to set it back the way it was?
