I can't mute sound.

Here's a weird one... All of the sudden my laptop's speakers stopped working.
I plugged in my speakers and the sound is fine. It gets weird because I
checked all my settings. I can't mute the sound. When I check the mute all
button, I still hear everything through my external speakers. Something seems
to have crossed somewhere. The volume setting doesn't funtion either. No
matter where I set the volume, it stays the same and won't mute. Any ideas?

Remove, and reinstall the drivers for the soundcard.
