Voluime icon is gone, no computer sounds

Recently, I noticed the volume icon is gone on my toolbar, my computer no
longer plays the Windows jingle when I log in or the "ding" noises when I
click on something in error.

When checking the Device Manager/Sound, Video and Game Controllers, it says
everything is working properly. However, when I check the Control
Panel/Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices and try to Adjust System Volume, it
says there are no Audio Devices.

I have speakers attached, and they work fine. When I log onto LaunchCast, I
can hear the music clearly. I used to be able to control the volume from the
toolbar, but no more. HELP!

Make sure you have the original or updated drivers before continuing.
Boot to Safe Mode > Device Manager and remove any/all devices related to your sound
device.
Close out of DM and do not reboot.
Open either Explorer or MyComputer.
Navigate to c:\documents and settings\your user name folder\local settings\temp.
Delete everything in the temp folder.
Navigate to c:\windows\prefetch.
Delete everything in the prefetch folder.

Reboot and Windows should redetect/reinstall the drivers, if not conduct a manual
install through Control Panel > Add Hardware.
