no volume control

About a week ago the volume control icon stopped appearing on the task bar.
I'm able to get it to appear by removing the check mark next to "place
volume icon on the taskbar" in "Control Panel/Sounds and Audio" and then
adding the check mark back again.

I tried using "always show" for the sound icon (task bar/properties/hide
inactive icons/customize). I also tried, unchecking the "hide inactive
icons" without success.

The problem started happening after I changed permissions for some programs
so that they would be usuable from a limited access account.

We have windows xp home edition.

Help appreciated.

Even without the sound icon in the tray area, do you hear sounds when
they are played? If not, check Device Manager to see if you even have a
sound device defined anymore. If there are no sound devices then
there's no point in showing an icon to control them.

In the Sounds and Audio Devices Properties applet under the Audio tab,
are any sound devices selected for playback?

Sounds still play without the icon.

Yes. It's "Avance Logic Sound".

You already tried method 1. Method 2 has you replace the sndvol32.exe
file. It's possible that you installed software along with your sound
card or the chipset for your motherboard that replaced this file (and
it isn't working or you are supposed to use their utility to add their
tray icon).

I tried method 2 (replacing the file) and the problem is still happening.

What did you install a week ago when the problem surfaced? Is there a
restore point before you installed that program or before the problem
appeared? Just be aware if you restore a system point that items you
installed later may not function (and you may have to reinstall them).
