Volume Control Program

During a horrible evening in which I installed and then uninstalled IE 7, I
apparently accidentally uninstalled my volume control program. I know this
(or think I know it) because when I noticed the icon was missing from my
taskbar, I went to Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices, and checked
"Place Volume Icon in the Taskbar." An error message pops up that says: "
Windows cannot display the volume control icon on the taskbar because the
Volume Control program has not been installed." How can I fix this?

Did you try system restore?

Click Start, Run, type SFC /SCANNOW, click OK. If any files are damaged
or missing, they'll be replaced. You may need to reboot afterwards so
damaged files will be replaced.

Also try a Restore point dated before you installed IE7.
