Problem with screen resolution and color [CROSS-POST]

I am the "de-facto" computer "fixer" for our church. They have an old
Gateway PII or III that I installed Win XP Home SP2 on (upgraded from
Win98SE). It recently started having a problem with the screen resolution
and color quality settings for the monitor. The video driver is NVDIA RIVA
TNT2 Model 64/Model 64 Pro.

Problem: I can't set it any higher that 640 x 480 and 4-bit color.

I've run Windows Update and gone to Gateway's website and updated everything
I could find from there. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers for
the monitor and video driver several times. Tried to do a Repair of WinXP,
but I don't have the option from the Control Panel or CD - guess it's
because it's an Upgrade disk rather than full install disk.

During bootup, the screen resolution and colors look fine, juts when it
presents the logon screen that it goes "bad". When I try to change the
setting and hit Apply, it immedialtely goes back to the old setting (640 x
480, 4-bit color). My guess is there's a problem in the registry, but don't
really know how to proceed fixing this.

Any ideas?

Try installing following drivers:

It sounds like you're running with VGA Save drivers. Possible bad video
card, you may try another video card. Or, If you want to try a repair
install of your windows OS just go to this link and follow the directions.(It
will work fine from your Upgrade CD)

Perform A Repair Installation of Windows X

If you cant get the XP drivers from Gateway then get a new video card
with XP drivers.
