Problem with MSInfo32- Please help!

Guest

Recently I clicked "system information" in system tools tab, the "Help and
Support" windows pop up. I checked the app path in the registry but it's the
same (C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MSInfo\MSInfo32.exe)
Please help me to solve this. I really don't want to reinstall XP just
because this small bug.

Thanks for your time,

This problem happens if the index.dat file is deleted from te following
folder:

C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\OfflineCache

Workaround:

Use a command-line switch to invoke msinfo32.exe

How to Use System Information (MSINFO32) Switches:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/300887/

Example:
msinfo32 /computer=myxpcomputer

To permanently fix the problem, you need to copy the index.dat from another
system.

Try following that path and double clicking MSInfo32.exe. If it works Ok,
rt click and choose Send to desktop as shortcut.

Hi William,

For some reason, rebuilding the Help center does not seem to recreate the
index.dat. But it used to function (may be in pre-SP2 systems?) I've tried
deleting the file, and ran the rebuild commands in a test system.

Hi Ramesh,

Thanks for the tip! :) I have used this procedure before some time ago on a
client's system (probably before SP2). I will make a note in my references.

Sent you an email to your mvps account.
