problem with files and settings transfer wizard.

I am installing XP on a computer that was running ME. I
used the XP cd to run the files and settings transfer
wizard and exported to an external hard drive. i ended
up with a 938 mb file called "USMT2IMG.dat."

I formatted and installed XP on the computer. i also
downloaded sp1. now when i run the wizard and point it
to the file, it says:

"The location you specified does not contain stored
information. Please type a valid folder path into the
edit box."

I tried moving the file to the c: drive and no help.

Any thoughts? Please tell me i did not screw this up...

Repsonses here or to (e-mail address removed) will be
greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the help, though I am still having problems.
I renamed the folder USMT2.UNC and the USMT2IMG.dat file
is in it. The wizard still says there is not there.

Is there only supposed to be the one file? Would it make
any difference that I changed the HD from fat32 to ntfs?

Any other help you can offer would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Brian

The .DAT file within the USMT2.UNC folder should be named IMG00001.DAT
There should also be a file named "status". If you have these two files within
the USMT2.UNC folder, you should only browse to the USMT2.UNC folder
when using the wizard.

"Would it make any difference that I changed the HD from fat32 to ntfs?"

Answer: No.

ok, so i ran the wizard again and exported the "user
data" (its a new install so there are no settings on it)
to the external hard drive.

it created a folder like you said, with the two files
like you said should be there named as you said they
should be named.

I was able to sucessfully import the file i had just
created.

then i replaced the new .dat file with my original .dat
file, renamed appropriately.

now when i run the wizard, it starts to run and then
immediately stops with the pop-up:

"Cannot complete the transfer. An error occurred while
the wizard was loading your data. The wizard cannot
create the data needed to save your settings. Make sure
you have enough disk space available."

there are 6 gb free.

thoughts?

Thanks,
Brian
