I put a microsoft office 2003 in my dvd drive to update my previous version,
but i get a message saying this format is not recognised by windows. I also
tried to updat windows home edition to xp proffesional, but still it wont
read the disc or load up. I tried cleaning the disc but still the same
problem.
I am using a laptop. Can someone help.

It is entirely possible the drive itself is defective.
If you have access to a USB CD/DVD drive - connect it and try to read the
CD/DVDs from it.

If it works - chances are - hardware issue.

Get a commercial CD/DVD drive cleaning disk and clean it. If that doesn't
help swap out the drive for a known good one.
