Dvd seen as cd rom

Hi, in device manager the dvd shows up properly; but in My Computer it just
says cd rom. If I try to view something on the dvd disk it says please
insert a disc. I have tried various disks.

DVD drives have two lasers, one for CD functions, the other for
DVD functions. All these (cheap) lasers fail some tiime or other.

Remove from Device Manager and reboot.

If this does not fix it, you might need to locate the upper/lower
filter registry tweak (search this newsgroup.)

Thanks I had already tried the uninstall.
How do I search for upper/lower...? I type in edit/find to no avail

You think winxp knows the cheap laser has failed? Hence renaming it to
generic cd drive?

Hi there are no upperfilters in there (4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318)
just lower filters. Could that be the prob?
