DVD ROM drive

I have a DVD ROM drive with Windows XP pro, and when i put in a blank CD and
click on the D: from 'My Computer' it says: "D:\ is not accessible. Incorrect
Function."
But when i put in a CD with information on it, it comes up as normal in 'My
Computer' and im allowed to access it.
Any ideas?

I went through and deleted a file in the reigstry before, which solved a
previous problem which was not being allowed to access any information at all
on disc.

I would be greatful if someone could help me out with this! :)
Many Thanks,
vB

This is exactly what you should get when you put in a blank CD.

What should be read if it's a blank CD ? It is a normal message.

Not being able to read a blank CD is no indication that your computer can't
burn CDs. Try burning to a blank CD, that's the test!

Your computer can't read the disk because it's BLANK.

Remember that there are different types of drives. CD ROM drives and DVD
ROM drives are "read only" (that's what the "RO" in "ROM" stands for).
Some computers come with drives that can burn CDs, but are read only for
DVDs. The drives that can burn DVDs AND CDs are a third type.

Windows XP (Home or Pro) treats "...RW" drives just like a regular
"...R" drives unless you install third party packet writing software.
With CD-R disks you write all the data (which is sometimes music) to the
disk then "close" the session to establish the disk's directory
structure. With a CD-R it's possible to write a second (or subsequent)
"multi-session" directory structure that adds new files or ignores
unwanted or obsolete versions of files, but those old files aren't
really removed from the disk. There are some CD and DVD readers that may
not be programmed to understand multi-session disks.

Packet writing software allows you to treat a CD-RW or (with DVD burning
hardware) like a SLOW hard drive. There's differences between packet
writing software from different publishers, so one publishers software
might think disks created with another company's software aren't
formatted. Some drives come with packet writing software like Nero or
CD/DVD Creator.

Also be aware that some hardware failures, especially laser failures,
could prevent a drive from using one type of disk (CD or DVD) without
impeding its ability to use the other type.

This is perfectly correct Windows behaviour.

However, you can alter the default behaviour by going into the CD drive
properties and enabling CD recording for that drive. Now when you put in a
blank CD you can open the CD (and get a blank page) to which you can drag
files and folders. The files and folders aren't actually burned to the disc
until you specifically request that they are (An item in the top left pane
of the folder page does this).
