DVD ROM Freezes Computer

When I try to open any DVD or any kind of disc in my DVD ROM ( Dell XPS400
Dual Player), my computer automatically freezes up. I can hear the disc try
to start up for about 5 seconds, then shuts down. My next click will start
the freeze, and all icons disappear from desktop. Have to restart. Have tried
defragment, disc cleanup, counterspy. Still same results.

Hi Robert,

You could try going in to Device Manager and removing the device and
then click on your computer name (at the top of the tree), right click
and "select scan for hardware changes". This will reinstall the driver.
Try updating the firmware if you know the manufacturer. You could
replace the cable.

If that doesn't work, your drive may be dead.
