Problem with downloading SP2 to XP Home

After a hard disk disaster I needed to download SP2 to my Windows XP Home.
All apparently went well with d/load and installation BUT, on re-starting
Windows, the program just hung - the only way I could expedite the situation
was to cold start in Safe Mode and then uninstall SP2 which only occupied
0.13MB!!
I would be grateful for any help as I feel my computer may be vunerable
without SP2 (???).

Did you install SP2 from a disk(CD) or Windows Update?
