problem with computer restarting

my computer just keeps restarting. just at random moments.
i tried system restore and that doesn't seem to help at
all. i downloaded the update that is supposed to fix the
memory dumping problem and still it has the same problem.
when it restarts it says system has recovered from a
serious error. i send the report and download the driver
updates when they are available. but nothing seems to help.

To start with goto your system properties by right clicking my computer and
choosing properties then and in the startup and recovery area click on the
settings tab.
Under system failure untick automaticly restart.
From now on you should get a blue screen containing an error message.
Post back with the message.

Hi

Do you see any Blue Screen? If not, right click on My Computer, select
Properties and then the Advanced tab. Click on Settings under 'Startup and
Recovery' and then uncheck 'Automatically restart'. Next time your PC tries
to restart you see a Blue Screen. Could you please post the Stop Code that
accompanies that BSOD? With that your problem could be isolated.

Hi Tyler,

Use one of these three options.

Right Click the My Computer Icon/Properties/Advanced/
Performance/Settings/Advanced/Change.

1. Set Page File to 0, ok your way out and reboot. Then follow the same
procedure and reset the Page File to System Managed File.

2. No Page File. Reboot. Then delete C:\Pagefile.Sys then revert the page
file setting.

3. Set the swap file size to zero, reboot. Re-set to System Managed,
reboot. Reset the Custom setting, reboot.

You Receive a "System Has Recovered from a Serious Error" Message After
Every Restart

Ok. The other guys told you how to get "the blue screen of death".
That will report the error - a bunch of #s. With me a bunch of #s,
but also a file or driver that failed.

You do not say how often this rebooting is happening. How often?

With me, it was very intermittent. It might not happen for several
days. Even a week. Or it might happen one day & the next. So I did
the blue screen of death thing. A different driver or whatever
filename was failing - like my USB driver one time, so I deleted all
USB drivers & reinstalled them all & reinstalled my USB devices as per
my computer manufacturers instructions. But then it crapped out again
after that. A different driver or filename failing - not sure about
the #s being different or the same. Then again another crap-out a few
days later. Different report again. I leave my computer on all day,
so the crashes were not caused by a virus, seeing as they didn't
happen all that often.

My solution... - I reinstalled Windows. All of that junk I had been
installing. All of the non-critical updates - un-needed. A bunch of
programs just to look at them. Who knows what they changed internally
inside of Windows? I am no expert, but something got mesed up.

And so far so good after a week. No crashes. & this time I am being
much more selective in what I install.

If it happens a lot - then you might have a virus. Do you have
anti-virus software? Do you use a firewall program when connected to
the Internet?

You've got to have anti-virus software & a firewall running. & also
you should use anti-spyware software. Ad Aware is freeware
anti-spyware. AVG version 6 I think is freeware anti-virus. (version
7 is Pro version & costs). Zone Alarm is freeware firewall. Xp also
has a built-in firewall but you have to turn it on.
