My problem is that recently, I went and accidentaly told an executable to
open using itself, and I checked the 'Always use selected program' box. Now,
every time I open something, that box opens and asks me what program I want
to use, even things like Windows Update asked me what to use to open some
file it needs!

Any helpful advice on how to change it back to before this mess?

Check this out... see if it helps...
You can try: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Scroll down to, and right-click link... choose save target as: 12. EXE (lnk and regfile)
Fix for Windows XP.
Also do the same to the one to the right: Link File Fix for Windows XP

After downloading, double-click the first one. Then yes to merge.
Reboot, and see if your problem has been
resolved. If not, try the second.

Hope this helps ya...

System Restore would be perfect for a situation like yours.
