Problem upgrading from Win 98 to XP Home

Gerard Hanway

HI,
I am trying to upgrade from Win 98 to XP and getting the
following error. This message appears after the 'copying
software prior to installation' phase completes.
'Setup was unable to read from or write to drive C:. If a
virus scanner is running, disable it then restart setup.'

I use Norton, but it was disabled prior to running the
upgrade.
After my first upgrade attempt, I ran Scandisk just to be
sure that there was no problem with my hard drive. It
reported that there were no errors on the drive.

The drive currently has 10Gb of free space.

I reran the upgrade after Scandisk said that all was ok,
but got exactly the same error.

I would appreciate any help offered.

I am only a home user with limited PC experience

Thanks

Gerard

If you have a valid upgrade copy of the software, you can
always give MS a call to have a tech walk you through the
install. 1-800-936-5700 press 0 for customer service and
let them know what's going on, they'll get you to a tech.

My advice would be to uninstall Norton anti-virus before
doing the upgrade. There's a chance it isn't completely
disabled. Plus, XP uses a different file system than 98,
so you might well have had to reinstall or upgrade Norton
after the upgrade anyway.

Does the BIOS have a virus scanning feature? Some do. If so go into
the BIOS right after the computer boots and disable it.
