how to load "XP home" onto 98

Hi all.
Whilst trying to install Windows XP on my 98 I received the following
message.."Unexpected error(150994700) in line 1773.
d:/xpsprtm/base/boot/setup/arcdisp.c".. press any key to continue"
Unfortunately this only caused a loop, and after several attempts I gave up.
Checking my upgrade advisor, I was informed that "Windows XP setup does not
support upgrading from 98 to XP Home.. setup cannot continue"
All this despite having 384 MB of ram and 33 GB of avail space !
Any help appreciated.

Hmm, you can do an in place upgrade from win98 to XP Home. What version of
XP Home do you have? How are you trying to do the upgrade? See this link

Rock.
Apparently the CD is not an upgrade one, it is genuine, but has
nothing on the disc to indicate what it is. When you try to do the upgrade
(recommended), the dropdown on that page doesn't have that option, only the
"full installation" option.
I then proceeded to do a clean installation. I set my BIOS as...
Ist Boot device .. CD ROM.
2nd " " .. IDE-O
3rd " " .. IDE-O
4th " " .. Disabled
When you begin I get the "press any key to Boot from CD" message, next
screen says that setup is inspecting hardware configuration.. Next is a blue
screen with that damn message.
I would assume that the code (150994700) would pinpoint the fault, but when
I contacted microsoft they were no help, and only gave me a link to their
webpage.

A full retail version can do an upgrade, but a full OEM version cannot. So
it seems your CD is an OEM version.

As to the error you are getting, sorry I can't help. A Google search on
that error code gives nothing but your post. Most failures during
installation are due to hardware. You could start by testing the RAM and
testing the hard drive with a utility for that purpose from the drive
manufacturer's web site.

For RAM testing here are three utilities. They will create a bootable
floppy or CD. Run at least two of them and let each one run for 24 hours
unless errors are detected immediately.
