Have got sony Vaio laptop, had it 14 months. Went onto the windows homepage
to update computer. the site asked to scan the computer to
verfiy/validate the software on the computerbefore it would look for
available upgrades for the computer. the only update it found was
the recent updtae of outlook version 2003 latest update,i think something
about a spam filter, anyway
it was the only one it found. once this had downloaded, it asked for the
computer to be restarted. I shut the computer down, and when I turned it on
to restart, it would not boot up. the screen initially came up as if it was
turning on normally (black screen, windows xp logo and a line /graphic
showing a loght flashing along it as the machine booting up.) after a few
moments, the flashing line stopped, and the best way to describe was that the
screen froze, or crashed. i turned the power off button, and when I put it on
again, the following screen came up, black background with text on, as
follows:

'We apologise for the inconvenience but windows did not start sucessfully. A
recent hardware or software change may have caused this.

If your computer stopped responding, restarted unextpectedly or was
automatically shut down to protect your files and folders chose last known
good configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked.

If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or
because the power/reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused
the problem chose start windows normally.

safe mode
safe mode with networking
safe mode with command prompt
last known good configuration
start windows normally

Use the up and down arrows keys to move the highlight of your choice'

I went to start in safe mode, and the next screen comes up full of text
lines,
all the same, (the best way that I can think of to describe this is like the
blackboard Bart wirtes on in the opening credits of the simpsons:) reading:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisc(0)portion(1)\windows\system32nrdrivers

couldnt wirte down rest of line as text dissapeared and safe mode started up.

Do you think somehow the update has embedded something by altering the
registry? or something that the computer now does not recognise the files?
I am well stuck.....hope all this makes sence to someone out there. It has
been suggested to me to try to de-installoutlook express see if that helps,
but Im not sure if this would (a)help, and (b) may be difficult to do as it
is part of windows XP.

Forgot to say, I also manged to run virus (norton)checker in safe mode and
found nothing, I also tried to use lst known good config, which didn't make
any difference. I also went through the entire help&support section and
nothing it suggested made any difference. Is there anyone out there who can
advise how I can fix this, without if possible, wiping the entire hardisck
and reinstalling everything from scratch? thanks in advance. if it makes any
difference I made the update sat 6 aug, around 16.oo hrs uk time, it was
something to do with spam filter outlook 2003

This is normal. Mine does it as well.

I have often found that after a boot up in safe mode I can restart my
computer in normal mode and it boots up OK. If that is not the case for
you, look in Add/Remove Programs if the latest updat is listed in
there. You may have to click on something to show updates or such. If
it is try uninstalling it.

If that fails, look in the Outlookexpress group and ask there how to
uninstall and reinstall Outlook Express.

Good luck!

problem still persisting after booting up in safe mode, will try to look for
update in add remove programs, though, to see if it helps. a colleague had
exact same problem after downloading the same update. is there some way of
reporting this? her brother had to completley wipe hard disk and reload all
software, so am starting to think this may be only option, thou I am dreading
doing it!
