XP Boot lockup

I have an HP Pavilion laptop
When starting XP Home , I get the following options following the hp logo
displaying
Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Last Known Good Configuration
Start Windows Normally

If I choose any of the safe modes, the screen locks up after displaying
several lines of text. It also displays a message like, "To stop loading
files, hit ESC"
In any of the safe modes, the computer always locks up after the same line
of text
If I choose Last Known Good Configuration or Normally, the Windows XP logo
pops up, loads some, and then the screen turns black and it freezes there.
No new software was recently added
I have tried going through BIOs and reset defaults but this has not solved
the problem.

Hi

If none of those options allow you access to Windows, then you will have to
try a 'Repair' install of XP. Please have a look at the following article
