Egwig the Fit

I have Googled and otherwise searched everywhere I can think of but
either get no info or I dont understand what I do get.
Problem is:-
Every time I try to install my printer (any printer) I get a message
saying that the spooler service is not running, please restart the
system. This makes no difference. I think some vital file or process is
missing. I am reluctant to completely reinstall Home XP as this means
wiping the hard drive.
I would appreciate any learned wisdom, suggestions or advice, or any
freeware that might help.
Thanks
Egwig

Do a repair reinstall. Install into the same directory.

Can this be of any help ?

SYMPTOMS
When you create a printer (either a local printer or a remote network
printer) by using the Add Printer Wizard, you may receive the following
error message:
Operation could not be completed. The print spooler service is not running.
CAUSE
This error occurs because the Spooler service has not been started or has
stopped working. To start the Spooler service, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

2. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then click Services.

3. Double-click the Printer Spooler service, and then change the startup
type to Automatic. This sets the Spooler service to start automatically
when you restart the computer.

4. If you want to start the spooler service immediately, click the Start
button under the Service Status field.

Tyr this:
Start / Run / type in "services.msc" w/o the quotes
Press Enter
When the services panel opens, go down to print spooler and
double click to open the properties panel. In the startup
type select Automatic. Under service status select start.
Select apply and then OK. Close the services panel. That
should start your print spooler and restart it every time
windows starts.

BTW, re-installing WinXP does not require wiping the HD.
You can do a repair install. You can Google for those
instructions. They must be followed carefully. If you do
it correctly, only the system will be refreshed to it's
original state. Your installed applications should not be
affected.

Good luck

Is there a repair install for Win98?

Thanks.

Apparently the spooler is dependent on another sevice, LEXBCES.EXE, and
it is this that has the real problem. The path to it is not properly
configered and I cannot find a way to do this.

On my machine it seems it is all or nothing, no repair, just total loss
of data.
Thanks anyway

Not by default it isn't; it sounds like LEXBCES.EXE has been a naughty boy
and set the Spooler service to depend on it. Used a Lexmark printer before?

Depending on how adept/confident you are with registry editing, you can can
alter the contents of "DependOnService" of:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Spooler

to only:

RPCSS
(with a return/blank line after it)

You should take a registry backup before doing this or ask a computer
professional to look into it for you. I'd be happy to help for a reasonable
fee - contact me by email if you're interested.

Perfect!!
JV16 Powertools reg editor.
Snip snip.
Job done.
Thank you so much

It may interest you to know that there is a whole heap of discussion
groups and the like all over the net debating this very problem. I read
stacks but no - one came up with an answer. Till you did.
Again my gratitude.
