Machine running XP home edition.
Printer is HP Deskjet 870CXi.
When printing a document the printer first produces a page with a
single line ---- @PJL ENTER LANGUAGE=PCL---- then prints the Winword doc
perfectly. On the taskbar there is a small icon with the letters EN
..When
the icon is selected it gives one the choice of English either US or
S.African (presumably for spelling). Not sure if the two are connected

but IMHO I believe that the single line looks like a printer command. I
have tried reinstalling the printer using the driver supplied by XP

and MS says that as long as the test page is OK the printer is
correctly setup.
Could this be a command from the Winword program resulting from a
choice of font etc ?
Any assistance in sorting this out woud be much appreciated
Kind regards,Richard

Did you check and see if HP has an updated driver for that printer?

I did and was assured that XP had the best available------Thank you for
your help--Kind regards, Richard
