Printing blues with multiple slides on a page

Hi,

There are 2 doubts I have and the second one is linked to the first
one.

1. I want to print 4 slides on a page. In my previous company I could
use the print command and then use the properties button in print
dialog. In the new dialog box there were many tabs (like one for
Landscape/potrait, how many per page etc) and by choosing options from
one of these tabs I could do what I wanted.

In the new company, when I click on properties button I get a dialog
box with header "HP universal printing" with first line saying Request
for print properties. This dialog box doesnt have any tabs and in the
bottom of the dialog box there is a note
"NOTE: To add/remove location profiles, manage your recently used
printer lists, or change other universal print settings go to HP
Universal printing settings". The last 4 words are a hyperlink in this
note and when I click on them I get a dialog box with tabs but none of
them have any options for how many to be printed per page (and neither
is there any for landscape/potrait). Can somebody tell me as to what is
happening here?

2. One of my collegues suggested using the handouts option in which one
can specify the slides per page on the original print dialog itself.
But this makes the size of the individual slides very small. On the
other hand if one uses the option 4 in one page (available in my
previous company) through Printer properties then size of the
individual slides are much bigger (and hence better).

3. Also, I want to know as to why MS introduced the concept of handouts
with lot of space between each of the slides in a page. Is that space
provided from viewpoint of folks being able to write in their comments
etc (I originally thought that handouts print both Slide and Notes and
thats why there is so much space, but I was proved wrong as no Notes
got printed after I wrote some Notes in my side)

Please guide me.

Where have YOU been, Hari? Haven't seen you in quite some time.

The Properties button takes you to the printer driver's own setup; what you
see there isn't part of PowerPoint.

Some printers allow multiple-sheet-per-page printing, some don't. Sounds like
your new printer (or its driver) lacks that feature.

You might want to check to see if updated drivers are available. What HP model
is it, by the way?

3. Also, I want to know as to why MS introduced the concept of handouts
with lot of space between each of the slides in a page.

This has been part of PowerPoint for so long ... I suspect the answer to your
question died out with the last of the Egyptian Pharaohs and is buried with
them under the sands of time. ;-)

How are you Steve. I have just moved to Bangalore (was in Delhi before)
and joined Analytics division of HP. Its a little strange that this
printing giant doesnt keep
the drivers of its own printers (HP laserjet 4345 MFP) updated (The
previous company also had a HP model, but it was a piggy version as
compared to the MFP we have here.).

Or could it be part of the design of IT department to not give too much
bandwith to employees while printing? But thats strange, because at the
end of the day I would be just saving paper/ink while printing (Again,
am printing multiple slides per page not because of philanthropy
towards my company, but more because it becomes difficult to manage so
many papers).

We have a saying: "The shoemaker's daughter goes barefoot"
It sounds as though it applies there too. ;-)

If IT can't help, there are other programs that might be useful.
There's one called FinePrint that, if I remember right, used to be able to
intercept the print stream and print multiple pages on one sheet.

Then, it would be better for me to contact one of the Archeologists
from Egypt. Let me see if a Google NG is available for that. Till that
time, I would use the empty space in handouts to draw some pyramids.

Sorry for being late in my response. A week back one of the HP help
desk person solved my problem. The driver that was already installed in
my computer was "HP universal printing PS". Now, the properties tab of
this driver has a check-box "Make a permenant instance of this printer
in my Printers folder". In my case this was not checked. Once checked,
some processing occured and I got a new printer icon in my printers
folder. I selected this as my default printer. Now, whenever I select
properties tab of the printer, Iam presented with an array of options
(4 pages per sheet, Landscape etc) and they are much more than what I
had in my previous company.

All's well that ends well.
